Basic Triangular Shawl

The shawl consists of 4 triangles. Triangle #1 (INC) begins at the top left corner of the shawl. As unbelievable as it sounds, the INC-ed edge is actually the top edge of the shawl. Triangle #2 (S/R) is the left back of the shawl, and ends at the center back. The center back point is created with Triangle #3 (R/S/R). Triangle #3 is the right back of the shawl. Triangle #4 (DEC) ends at the top right corner of the shawl.

Triangles 1-4

Width Calculation

The # of Sts determines the diagonal width of the shawl, not the width from end to end along the top, nor the length at the center back. The diagonal is from the neck/shoulder point to the outside edge of the shawl. Typically, this is 20.5 inches. This gives you a shawl that is 46 inches in length at the center back, and 72 inches wide from end to end along the neck edge.

Tips & Tricks

It makes no difference if you begin on the left or the right side of the needle bed. If left handed, begin on the right. If beginning on the right, substitute left for right and vice versa for these instructions.

Center Back Eyelets

When knitting Triangle #2 and #3, DO NOT wrap the Ndls in “Hold”. This creates a vertical line of lace directly at the center back of the shawl. To avoid this line of lace, ALWAYS wrap the Ndls in “Hold”.

Optional Outside Edge Eyelets

Counting from the left end Ndl, transfer the 2nd St to the 3rd St, EVERY 2 Rs, leaving the empty Ndl in WP to create the eyelet.

Optional Top Edge Eyelets

Always Full Fashion INC on Triangle #1, and always Full Fashion DEC on Triangle #4, leaving the empty Ndl in WP to create the eyelet.

Hems & Edgings

There are many ways to prevent the bottom edge from rolling such as the “Over & Under” hem, the “Double Decrease” hem, the “I-Cord” hem, applying any scalloped lace edging, or knitting fringe.

Fringe

To determine the length of fringe, lay a tape measure on the needle bed. Count the Ndls required for the appropriate length. When knitting the shawl, on the left, pull 2 Ndls into WP, skip the required # of Ndls for the fringe, and pull the 3 Ndls into WP for the shawl. After the shawl is blocked, trim away those 2 additional Sts.
