3 Hem Techniques For Sideways Knitted Skirts

Double Decrease Hem

This is truly a marvelous finish to set off any sideways knit skirt hem. When finished, it looks like a tiny diagonal rib, or peculiar cable. This hem is not elastic. It’s also uncommonly fast, and remarkably easy. This technique is not reliant upon the direction of travel. For left handed people, begin on the extreme left and work to the right.

Procedure

Commencing at the extreme right hand side of the Ndl bed, with the wrong side facing, hang the garment. Use whatever amount of Ndls is necessary. If you run out of Ndls, don’t fret. New Ndls become available. Place all Ndls in “E” position except the 2 at the extreme right end. These 2 Ndls should be in UWP. All Sts are behind the latches. Set the carriage to MT, and “Hold”. With COR, K 2 Rs on these 2 Ndls, but NEVER wrap the last Ndl. Bring the next 2 Ndls in “E” position, to UWP, so that they too, will knit. K 2 Rs on these 4 Sts. *Transfer the first 2 Sts (closest to the carriage) onto the remaining 2 Sts, now in “B” position (making a double DEC). Bring the next 2 Ndls in “E” position, back to UWP, so that they too, will knit. K 2 Rs on these 4 Sts.*

If you find you haven’t nearly enough Ndls: K the hem until you are down to the final 2 Ndls. Using the 2x1 transfer tool, transfer these 4 Sts (2 on each Ndl) to Ndls (99R–100R). There are now 198 empty Ndls. Hang the remainder of the garment on these vacant Ndls and proceed.

Repeat between *–* as many times as necessary, until you reach the other end, and the last 2 Ndls need to transfer. Make a single DEC in the same direction as you have been working, and K 2 final Rs on this single Ndl. Break the yarn with a tail long enough to pull through this last St to secure it, and, to mattress stitch this end to the beginning. That’s all there is to it, simple, quick, efficient, and beautiful!

I-Cord Hem

“E-wrap” CO over Ndls (1R–5R). Set the carriage to “Normal” with the weaving brushes engaged. K 2 Rs at MT. Set the left “Part” button. With the knit side facing, hang an edge St of the garment on Ndl 1R. (Some experimentation here might be necessary. See the note.) K 2 Rs. Hang another edge St on Ndl 1R, and K 2 Rs. Continue this process all the way around the entire hem. When you reach the end, break the yarn with a tail long enough to pull through all 5 Sts, and to mattress stitch this end to the beginning.

Note: The I-cord will force the “hanged” St to one side of the garment, either the knit side, or the purl side. Depending on a myriad of reasons, these Sts might wind up on the incorrect side. It’s always better to “play” first, and be certain, than to blithely plunge ahead. Several options can remedy this unsightly happenstance.

  •  1. Hang the piece with the purl side facing.
  •  2. Set the right “Part” button instead of the left one.
  •  3. Do both #1 and #2.

Over & Under Hem

This technique is the only one of the 3 that is accomplished while knitting the skirt.
