finished, this procedure creates a 3½" collar.
When buttoned, this forms a double-breasted, shawl collar.
When not buttoned and permitted to fall loosely, this creates
a roll collar. In addition to an existing garment shape, you
will need these 2 measurements.
Collar Sts: 14"
converted into Sts.
Collar Rs: ½
of your back neck measurement converted into Rs |
|
| Creating
The New Garment Shape

Sts to the neckline side of the neck/shoulder point on your
existing garment shape.
Insert the number of Collar
Rs, straight up from the neck/shoulder point on your existing
garment shape. |

Knitting
The Garment
CO, and knit to the neck/shoulder
point, performing any shaping on the side seam, armhole, and
shoulder Sts. Hang a yarn marker on the unshaped side. This
is the beginning of the collar’s back neckline. Continue
knitting on these 14" of Sts according to the number
of Rs in the Collar Rs measurement. Remove these Sts on a
garter bar, or W/Y. Knit a duplicate piece, reversing all
shaping and position of the yarn marker. With the right side
facing, re-hang the Sts from the first piece. Be sure all
Sts are behind the latches, and all ndls are in “E”
position. With the purl side facing, re-hang the Sts from
the second piece, into the hooks of these ndls. Pull all Sts
through. Bind off. Knit a Back and Sleeves. |

Completion
With the right side facing,
hang the Rs of the collar (between yarn markers) on the back
neckline Sts, placing the collar seam at center 0. With the
purl side facing, hang the Sts of the back neckline into the
hooks of these ndls. Pull the Sts through. Bind off. Join
the shoulders. Fold the remainder of the Collar to the inside,
forming a Collar Facing. Join the sleeves, underarms, and
side seams. Because knit stretches, it will automatically
form the appropriate curve required in the Shawl Collar.
