The “Over & Under” Hem

This technique is useful, not only for blanket edges, but a perfect solution for sideways knit skirt hems.

Preparation

Before you begin knitting, measure off a length of MC yarn, triple the finished length of the project. (You need 2 extra yarns for a blanket – one for each edge).

The Procedure

CO and K 2 Rs of your project. Pull to UWP the last 7 ndls on the hem edge (or both ends for a blanket). With a strand of the extra yarn, begin by hanging it over the UWP ndl closest to the center of the work. Go under the next ndl, and over the next ndl. You will be working toward the outside edge. Keep working over and under until you reach the last ndl. This ndl will be an “over”. (Repeat this for the other edge on the blanket.) K 2 Rs. Bring up the extra yarn from below and repeat the “over/under” technique, working from the outside toward the center. K 2 Rs.

Repeat this 4-R process. After blocking, weave in the yarn tails.
